AM- Circle of Security in Education

Title: Circle of Security in Education

The Circle of Security began as a program to assist parents to read the cues and miscues of their children, meet the child's emotional needs and understand and attend to emotional protective responses that might come up within themselves that gets in the way of doing this. As we've come to understand the importance of secondary attachment figures (teachers, child care providers, educational assistants, bus drivers, secretaries, janitors- the school community) in a child's life, it was a natural fit to expand this work to the education and child care system. Here in Manitoba, this has been a growing movement in the field of early learning and child care where a focus on relationship-based care has produced a significant reduction in aggressive behaviors in children, in expulsions or suspensions, in the reliance on extra staff to assist and an increase in staff retention .

Over the course of the morning, we will learn about how this model can be adapted to be utilized in schools, how one obtains the training to use it, and how it dovetails perfectly with trauma-informed care.
