Manitoba Association for Art Education (MAAE)

Deep Breaths: Meeting Our Own Needs

At the beginning of every flight, the flight attendant reminds us: “Put on your own oxygen mask before assisting others.” The truth is, educators are frequently prone to caregiver fatigue and burnout.

This MTS PD Day, join the MAAE for a day of making, learning, and collegiality and choose your own path:

● Would it be most helpful to gather activities and lessons, ideas to spur kids’ creativity, or project prompts you can use in your classroom?

● Or do you need some rest from the daily grind - a day to connect with other teachers and rejuvenate your own artistic passion for experimentation, play, and art-making?

It’s up to you to make this day your own!

NOTE:
● Please be sure to take note of the location of your workshop. Workshops are located at various satellite locations around Winnipeg and in Morden, MB. One workshop will be held outdoors, and one includes a lot of walking.

● This year, registrants can select from half-day or full-day workshops.

● All spots are only available with pre-registration and must be reserved ahead of time; sorry - there will be NO walk-up / on-site registration available.

● Most workshops have a “lab fee” to cover art materials you will consume in the workshop, and any preparation of supplies done by the presenter. This means that the daily rate for workshops can range significantly, depending on the workshop selected.

● Lunch is not included in the sessions, however, the MAAE encourages opportunities to meet with other teachers for sharing and socializing, so all full day sessions include a 90 minute lunch break - you can choose to bring a lunch, make art through your lunch hour, or head out to a local eatery to hang out with your colleagues.

● Register early (on or before September 15th) and save $5 on your conference registration!

FULL - MAAE5: Half-Day Session: Inquiry-based Learning and Contemporary Art

This workshop will help you go beyond the “Elements and Principles” and find new ways to integrate contemporary art into your existing classroom curriculum. This session will use Art21 videos and resources, as well as additional learning materials. We will view selected contemporary artists’ work as our starting point. There will be brainstorming, journaling, sharing, and hands-on application activities. We will model inquiry-based strategies and our learning will be guided by both the facilitator and the participants. One thing is for certain - you will return to your classroom with new ideas! Participants may access a curated reading list and resources after the session.

FULL - MAAE01: A Trio of Media Explorations: Cut & Paste (A Collage Workshop), Don’t Think Just Do(odle)! (A Drawing Workshop), and Collective Artwork (A Collaborative Painting Workshop)

This three-part workshop will let you “dip your toes” into three ways of making:

COLLAGE: Create your own original and unique works of art with paper, scissors, and glue. During our workshop, you'll be guided through a variety of image-making processes and techniques, with casual guidance and friendly expertise along the way. Time will disappear as you search through books and magazines, spend time cutting and finally arranging your physical works. Participants will have open access to a mix of second-hand books, magazines, and other paper treasures, plus an array of mixed media bits and pieces. Whether you’re attending solo, with a date, or mate, we can’t wait to help you relax and get in touch with your inner artist. Make as many original pieces as you want!

DRAWING: Create your own original and unique works of art with markers, oil pastels, and coloured pencils. During our workshop, You will be guided through fun drawing prompts around a beautiful long table with objects, fresh flowers, and fruits. The prompts are designed so that you can have a break from everyday life and have fun, while at the same time learning new drawing techniques. The result is fun still lives, colorful lines, and portraits! You can make as many pieces as you’d like!

COLLECTIVE ARTWORK: Experience the special magic that arises in co-creating an artwork. The Collective Artwork is created through individual tasks where the participants paint small canvas tiles that are put together in a predetermined order. In this way, everyone puts their personal touch on a work of art! The original artwork is always kept secret from the participants and the tiles must be completed to reveal it, as the tiles are assembled, the artwork is gradually revealed. The dimensions of the Collective Artwork varies from large installations to smaller works of art as the size of the artwork varies with the number of participants. The social artwork is suitable for everyone!

FULL - MAAE14: Pysanky: Ukrainian Decorated Eggs

The word for the Ukrainian folk art of egg decorating, Pysancharstvo, derives from the verb pysaty which means to write. Originally these eggs were not simply ornaments, but pictographic expressions of the maker’s hopes and wishes; celebration of life and loved ones; and confirmation of beliefs and culture. In this full-day workshop you can explore both traditional and contemporary materials and symbolisms to create your own unique art using raw eggs. We will begin with a short overview of the history, and move gradually through design and execution introducing tools and techniques step by step. Throughout the process, our group will be invited to co-construct ideas for using this activity to support cross-curricular classroom learning outcomes. A booklet will be provided instructing ways to recreate developmentally appropriate Pysanka workshops for the classroom, and participants are invited to take reference photos of workshop materials and layout.
