FULL - Keynote - The Power of Gamification in Education

Education is a system that has not evolved for years. Rows, desks, worksheets and the like have ruled education systems and expectations of the past and as well as the present. It is time to move education to the future. By examining education practices of the past and a brief general history of education, participants will learn how school could, and would, benefit from a pedagogical change. Learning what gamification is, how it can be applied and how it can translate to any grade or subject area provides a session anyone could walk away and take something from. Using a mix of real world experience, humour and authenticity, this talk promises to get you thinking about your own passions and your classroom

Presenter: Scott Hebert

Scott Hebert is an educator from Sherwood Park, Alberta in Elk Island Catholic Schools and has been a teacher for 13 years. He has made it his goal to eliminate the stereotype that school is, and has to be, boring. Gamification was the solution Scott and his students came up with and since its integration into his classroom pedagogy, it has reached classrooms all over the world.

Scott has been recognized both provincially (Alberta Excellence in Teaching Award recipient in 2013) and Internationally (Best Gamification in Education Project Globally in 2015) for his efforts towards promoting Gamification in the classroom. These efforts, and the continued growth of the program and idea, also led him to be named among the Top 50 Finalists for the Global Teacher Prize Award of 2020, making him the 1st Albertan ever selected and Human Kinetics Alumni of the Year in 2017 from his alma mater Laurentian University. He lives by the message, “Would you want to be in your classroom?” and strives to achieve this goal daily.

Scott is a single dad to 2 amazing children, author of 2 books on gamification and avid supporter of all things sports and athletics.
Kids have to go to school, why should it feel like a chore?

FULL - AM 10 : Welcome to the Quiet Year

Mark will teach and demonstrate “A Quiet Year” which is great in classes where there may be a story telling component like ELA and social studies.

The Quiet Year is a map game. You define the struggles of a community living after the collapse of civilization, and attempt to build something good within their quiet year. Every decision and every action is set against a backdrop of dwindling time and rising concern.

The game is played using a deck of cards – each of the 52 cards corresponds to a week during the quiet year. Each card triggers certain events – bringing bad news, good omens, project delays and sudden changes in luck. At the end of the quiet year, the Frost Shepherds will come, ending the game.

The Quiet Year occupies an interesting space – part roleplaying game, part cartographic poetry.

FULL - PM 1 - 11: Game Master Your Lessons with the Classroom Story

Guided by principles of gamification, constructivism, and deeper learning, a Classroom Story is a shared narrative experience that combines imagination, cooperation, game elements, curricular outcomes, and instruction into one engaging package. Think campfire stories mashed up with a roleplaying game and a notebook. In this hands-on session, attendees will all be thrown into a “Classroom Story” where they will have to think quickly, work together, and write things down. A Classroom Story is not a silver bullet or the solution to education. It is also not an acronym or list of "how-to's". It is an empowering approach that encourages and challenges teachers to build on their strengths, get creative, and engage students in ways only limited by your classes’ collective imagination.

The teacher acts as storyteller and moderator; preparing the setting, inciting event, general plot, curricular outcomes, and any game elements. Students engage with the story by becoming characters, authors, collaborators, and actors. By responding to shared events in the story, students are stimulated, challenged, and encouraged to interact and cooperate. There are opportunities to create, mess-up, move around, talk, draw, write, act, code, or whatever! A Classroom Story becomes something unique that teachers and students experience and create together. The end result will be a shared experience that you could never totally plan out and will produce work you could never have expected.

FULL - PM 1/2- The Power of Gamification in Education

Children, and adults for that matter, have never been more engaged by games than they are now. Why is that though? What draws people so deeply into games? What brings them back and what drives them to keep trying to improve in the face of great adversity? Can you harness the power of the psychology behind game creation and turn your class into something all students will beg to be in?

In an education system designed where students start with 100% and lose as they go, gamification flips this concept onto its head. Focusing on the individual’s progression while increasing both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation exponentially, this pedagogy has the power to bring education into the modern era.

Can anyone do this? I am here to tell you that you can and it is easier than you think! I have successfully turned my Grade 8 science and social courses into a live action role playing game. Students compete against the teacher, each other, other teams and other classes in an effort to level up and progress while using their classroom knowledge to solve problems in real and practical ways!

Sounds intimidating but it is not! You will walk out of this session inspired and driven to make changes to your teaching, as quickly the next day you enter your classroom. Will you press start?

FULL - PM 2 - 11: Game Master Your Lessons with the Classroom Story
