Workplace Safety and Health Training for Principals

The Manitoba Teachers’ Society and the Manitoba School Boards Association, in conjunction with guest speaker Jack Slessor (Certified Safety and Health Consultant), have developed a one-day workshop for training Principals, Vice-Principals, and other school or divisional supervisors in their Workplace Safety and Health responsibilities. The one-day workshop will cover the following two topics:

1. Introduction to Supervisors in Schools (9:00 am to noon)

“Introduction to Supervisors in Schools” will be a short overview of the material normally covered in the full day “Supervisors and SAFE Work” course. The presentation has been customized to reflect the unique workplace safety and health challenges found in schools.

Objective: Participants will leave with an understanding of who is recognized as a supervisor under the WSH legislation, the role and obligations of supervisors when it comes to safety and health, and how they can influence safety culture in the workplace.

2. Introduction to Investigating Workplace Incidents in Schools (12:45 pm – 3:30 pm)

“Introduction to Investigating Workplace Incidents in Schools” will be an overview of the material covered in the full day “Investigating Workplace Incidents” course. The presentation has been customized to reflect the unique workplace safety and health challenges found in schools.

Objective: Participants will learn the seven steps of conducting a workplace safety and health investigation and how to avoid common mistakes.

This workshop counts as one day towards the mandatory two days of Workplace Safety and Health committee member training to be funded by the employer.

There is no cost to register, and lunch will be provided, but release time and other related expenses are the legislated responsibility of the employer.
