FULL - Keynote - Landscapes of Injustice: Teaching Japanese Canadian Internment

In July of 2019, teachers Clara Kusumoto, Lindsey Griffin, and Grace Sheppard participated in Landscapes of Injustice’s Field School and course at the University of Victoria. Landscapes of Injustice is “a research and public history project exploring the dispossession of Japanese Canadians as part of their forced displacement and internment in the 1940s” (Landscapes of Injustice). The two-week course was made up of a one-week bus tour that visited internment camps in the interior of British Columbia. The second week took place at the University of Victoria where they participated in intensive seminars and group projects.

This presentation focuses on Japanese Canadian Internment during the Second World War. During World War II Japanese Canadians not only faced racism and discrimination but were removed from their homes and communities and placed into prison camps by the Canadian Government. Their homes and properties were taken from them, which had a long-term impact on the Japanese Canadian community. This presentation provides teachers with the resources and lesson plans needed to teach Japanese Canadian internment and dispossession of home.

As a non-profit charitable organization, we believe in the potential of all children and provide an interactive learning environment that nurtures the power of imagination and spirit of self-discovery. For over 30 years, we have been a place for families and students to play, laugh, learn and grow.

At the Children’s Museum, students in Nursery to Grade 5 can express their own unique voice through our educational programming opportunities. Join us as we discuss how our 12 hands-on galleries connect to what students are learning at school. We’ll introduce our new (FREE!) school programs on climate change and highlight programs and special events that will help you to reach your curriculum goals (and allow your kids to get messy at the museum instead of in your classroom)! And of course, we’ll provide useful tips and tricks for your next field trip. Our goal is to create an environment of learning that allows students to express their creativity through hands-on, engaging, educational play. Our education team is excited to meet you virtually and learn how we can best support your teaching in the classroom.
