FULL - Harnessing the Power of Writing to Develop Literate Minds

This session will highlight the important role IW plays in language development and reading. C.C. will also provide an overview of IW and will address scheduling and management issues that if left unaddressed can create barriers for this effective practice.

Presenter: C.C. Bates

C.C. Bates is Professor of Literacy Education at Clemson University and the Director of the Early Literacy Center for South Carolina. She has written 30+ scholarly publications and developed the Record of Reading app for oral reading assessment, which has been downloaded over 400,000 times. Bates is also the author of Interactive Writing: Developing Readers through Writing (Benchmark) and the co-author of The Next Step Forward in Running Records (Scholastic). She is married and has two children.

FULL - Using Interactive Writing to Teach Foundational Skill: Part 1

In the first part of this two-part session, C.C. will examine how the creation of text during IW supports the teaching of foundational skills including print referencing, phonological awareness, and the alphabetic principle.

Reading is much more than calling out words on the page. In this session, C.C. will discuss how to use IW to teach reading fluency and comprehension. She will also highlight ways to integrate IW across the curriculum and ideas for sharing texts with families and caregivers.
