Session Two - Intersections of 2SLGBTQIA+ Inclusion

In this two-hour workshop, Christopher Campbell (he/him) and Ley Fraser (they/them) will present findings from the Second Climate Survey of Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia in Canadian Schools and facilitate a discussion about how to practice 2SLGBTQIA+ inclusion in educational contexts.

Presenters: Christopher Campbell and Ley Fraser

Christopher Campbell (he/him) is a PhD candidate in Education at the University of Manitoba focusing on 2SLGBTQ+ inclusion and policy in the context of education reform. Chris worked for ten years as research coordinator for Dr. Catherine Taylor's RISE Research Program at the University of Winnipeg, which included the Every Teacher Project on LGBTQ-inclusive Education (in partnership with Manitoba Teachers’ Society) and the RISE Project on 2SLGBTQ+-expansive Teacher Education. Alongside Dr. Tracey Peter and Dr. Taylor, he was co-investigator on the Second National Climate Survey on Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia in Canadian Schools in partnership with Egale Canada. Ley has a background in Social Psychology (M.A.) and Gender Studies (M.A.), and draws on this interdisciplinary background in teaching and educating on issues of gender, sexuality, and social justice. Their education and teaching philosophy is grounded in applied Sociology and facilitating practical supports in social spaces.

Session Three - Exploring contemporary masculinities on identity formation, interpersonal relationships

Shaped by our cultural histories, masculinity has a profound impact upon the world in which we live and function. Yet very few opportunities exist for individuals to question, explore, critique and embrace masculinity at its core in school environments.

This interactive and introspective session broadly explores masculinity throughout youth’s psychosocial development, investigates masculinity at the junctions of the intrapersonal and interpersonal, and invites an opportunity to critically discuss how masculinity can be unthreateningly re-imagined for a sustainable future for all genders.

By the end of this session participants will:

• Identify the social construction of masculinity and implications of masculine expression throughout diverse cultures
• Mobilize concepts such as hegemonic masculinity and misandry
• Identify diverse masculinities within male identities
• Learn ways to foster emotionally focused communication in the delivery of lesson plans

Presenter: Reece Malone

Based out of Winnipeg, Dr. Reece Malone (he/him/siya) is the CEO of Diversity Essentials, and Sexuality Consultants and Support Services Manitoba, Inc. He is a certified sexologist and holds a Masters of Public Health and Doctorate of Human Sexuality. Reece is a certified sexuality educator and supervisor, and a cultural and clinical sexologist.
