Session Descriptions
Morning Sessions
Keynote: Fostering Entrepreneurship and Innovation
Manisha Narula (League of Innovators) and Joshua Zaporzan (Stu Clark Centre for Entrepreneurship) will team up to talk about how we can support and foster entrepreneurship and innovation in our applied commerce courses with a focus on developing the entrepreneurial mindset. Now more than ever, having an entrepreneurial mindset will benefit all students (and adults) as we work together to build a post-pandemic economy.
Everything DiSC
What if people had their needs written all over them? Have you ever wondered why some people just don’t get you? Or ever thought “I cannot even begin to know what others need-even when I ask them, I still don’t know.”
Most of us have felt that way at one time or another! The good news is there’s a simple tool designed to help you understand yourself AND other people too. Everything DiSC® helps you build more effective working relationships based on an understanding of different behavioural styles.
DiSC® is a very simple – and memorable – model made up of four basic styles: D, i, S, and C
Since each person has a unique behavioural profile, people are walking around all over the world with different styles and priorities. We believe that these differences are extremely valuable. Once you assess these differences and harness their value, you’ll have better workplace communication and healthier organizations.
In this introductory session, you will learn how to help your students understand who they are and how to communicate and collaborate effectively with others. Session participants may choose to delve into this topic even further in the one-hour afternoon session provided.
Helping Students Be "Audit" They Can Be: Resources Available from the CPA Profession
In this interactive presentation, we will explore:
• an update on the accounting profession in Manitoba;
• the wealth of financial literacy tools and resources available to assist teachers in preparing students for financial success;
• the digital resources available to promote the value of a CPA designation and help students understand if pursuing a career as a CPA is the right choice for them.
Introduction to Fin Lit 101 (Online Course)
In this session, you will be introduced to the FinLit 101 program and how you can use this resource in your finance courses.
FinLit 101 will be a complete online financial literacy program. It can be used independently by youth or used as a classroom learning program by teachers. FinLit 101 will provide much of the core instruction on 12 different learning modules via host delivered video animations with links to additional complementary resources such as podcasts, key articles, etc. Teachers can sign up their classes which will then engage in the program as their own small community. Students will be able to post comments and share their views with others in their class. Teachers can post assignments, monitor student progress, and add “points” to recognize exceptional work. There is a gamification component to incentivize engagement and learning. The program can be used in whole or by selected modules to correspond to curriculum and course topics. The FinLit 101 program will be available in English and French. The goal is for the entire program to be completed to launch in November 2021 – Financial Literacy Month.
Afternoon Sessions
Option 1: DiSC Training Session
In the morning you will be introduced to the Everything DiSC program. In this session, you will delve deeper into the program through a series of activities that will help you to better understand yourself AND learn how to communicate more effectively with others.
Leave with resources and tools you can use to introduce this concept to your students right away! This would be an excellent session for anyone teaching Business Communications, Entrepreneurship, Management and/or Career Development. Learn how to give your students the edge when it comes to effectively communicating with others in the workplace!
Note: This one-hour session starts at 1:00 pm. Remaining time available to explore the provided “Resource Playlist” on your own OR spend time extending your learning with a colleague OR participate in Option #2 session.
Option 2: StuKent Mimic Personal Finance Software Review
Take a tour of the Mimic Personal Finance program and learn how this software simulation can be used to enhance your finance courses. Mimic Personal Finance uses decision-theory learning to teach students the basic principles of financial literacy in a simple and powerful way. Rather than simply studying financial concepts, students actually experience financial decision making. They are able to make decisions on how to spend their money in an ongoing role-playing simulation that has real in-class consequences.
Note: This one-hour session starts at 2:00 pm. Remaining time available to explore the provided “Resource Playlist” on your own OR spend time extending your learning with a colleague.
Option 3: Choose Your Own Adventure
