In response to COVID-19 guidelines, TEAL Manitoba is providing professional development throughout the year, on MTS PD day October 23rd and through 5 mini-PD sessions. A variety of topics and formats will be explored according to member needs and safety guidelines. All TEAL sessions will be appropriate for K-12 EAL needs.

On October 23rd: We have two local consultants sharing strategies for Transitioning EAL students through the Provincial Intake Process and Using technology to enhance English language acquisition for EAL learners. The two sessions are free for TEAL members. Online links will be sent by email after registration is complete.

The EAL Intake Process - A ZOOM presentation by Jayesh Maniar

This interactive session will introduce the new Provincial EAL Intake Process developed by Manitoba Education. Participants will become familiar with the requirements for initial registration and assessment for EAL students and the contents of the EAL Intake Process documents.

Jayesh Maniar is the EAL and Newcomer Education Consultant for Manitoba Education. He has been a classroom teacher, a school administrator, and a Division-wide EAL Consultant. Jayesh’s passion is helping all students achieve their full potential.

Online Learning Tools and Strategies for Building Success - A ZOOM presentation by Phil Taylor

This hands-on virtual workshop will explore a variety of educational technology tools to support EAL learners, such as MS Immersive Reader, Flipgrid, Book Creator, voice recording tools, student/class blogs, etc.

Participants will examine ways that technology can be intentionally used throughout the process of teaching and learning, so that it plays an active role in learning English as an Additional Language.
Participants will learn how to take advantage of pre-installed Mac and Window's software, as well as a variety of web based tools and resources to:
• Increase student engagement and motivation
• Offer mobility of learning
• Teach students valuable tools to learn English and for the future
• Be a potential time saver for teachers
• Promote learner independence
Provide students access to target cultures

Phil began his teaching career in Manitoba learning from and teaching EAL students in Northern Manitoba. TESL was the first SAGE Group he was a member of. Phil is now an Educational Technology Specialist, Trainer & Consultant. He has used a large variety of educational technology tools in his classroom such as: G-Suite for Education, Microsoft Office, Adobe Suite, Learning Management Systems, Curation tools, Interactive White Boards.

Zumba: It is time to renew your energy and wellness! Zumba class and yoga will be run through ZOOM. The link will be sent to you by email after registration is complete.

Poppy Nybole is a certified Zumba and yoga instructor. She also takes ballroom and Latin American dance classes. She is the mother of two teenaged girls and a substitute teacher.
There will be a break from 2:00– 2:30

Using the Inquiry Model for Language Instruction in Content Areas; Using technology to enhance English language acquisition for EAL learners; Engaging middle years language learners through differentiated project design; Shifting Perspectives: A Panel Discussion with a university professor, classroom teacher, school administrator; Stories of Success – Personal narratives from immigrant parents and service providers who have learned how to navigate and thrive in Manitoba’s educational system.
