Sessions - 9:05 AM-10:15 AM

FULL - Plenary - Limitless: Learn, Lead and Live without Barriers

Recent years have seen an explosion of scientific evidence, from neuroscience, psychology and education showing that there is a different way to teach and learn, available to us all. When people take a limitless approach to learning – in mathematics and in life – different pathways open up to them, leading to higher, more equitable and more enjoyable achievement. Mindset messages are important but they do not take root unless they are accompanied by a multiplicity approach to content and life. In this session we will consider what a mindset and multiplicity approach to mathematics is. We will watch videos of students, work on mathematics together, and think together about ways to create equitable and engaging learning experiences that are limitless. Participant limit: 1400. ALL registrants are expected to attend

Presenters: Dr. Jo Boaler and Cathy Williams, Stanford University, Stanford, California

Location: Club Regent Event Centre, 1415 & 1425 Regent Avenue West, Winnipeg

Participant Max: No max.

Suitable for: Everyone

Sessions - 10:50 AM-12:05 PM

FULL - AM1 - Limitless: Learn, Lead and Live without Barriers (Part-1)

In this session, we will share our teaching that we ran with 81 middle school students. In 18 lessons, their grade level growth improved by 2.8 years. How did we achieve that? Come and find out the messages, and the lessons we gave them to develop their “limitless minds," and how the approach can be used at all grade levels. Participant limit: 1000. Audience: Grades K-6.

Presenters: Dr. Jo Boaler and Cathy Williams, Stanford University, Stanford, California

Location: Club Regent Event Centre and Casino Hotel, 1415 & 1425 Regent Avenue West, Winnipeg

Participant Max: 1000

Suitable for: Grades K-6

FULL - AM2 - Mathematical Modeling in the Curriculum

This session focuses on mathematical modeling from the earliest grades through high school. I will show that people model all the time but do not realize it because it is so commonplace. Examples will be drawn from arithmetic, algebra, and geometry and range from simple to quite complex.

Presenter: Dr. Zalman Usiskin, University of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois

Location: Club Regent Event Centre and Casino Hotel, 1415 & 1425 Regent Avenue West, Winnipeg

Participant Max: 400

Suitable for: Grades K-12

Sessions - 1:45 PM-3:00 PM

FULL - PM1 - Limitless: Learn, Lead and Live without Barriers (Part-2)

In this session, we will share what it means to teach with a Limitless Mind and to share that with your students. We will work on mathematics tasks together that are visual, creative, and open. We will share the important messages to give with the tasks and we will extend what we know about adapting all tasks to give limitless messages. We will watch films of teaching together to unpack the important moves that help students develop limitless minds and we will help everyone build a positive relationship with mathematics, develop more growth mindsets and to go through life with a limitless approach. Participant limit: 1000. Audience: Grades K-6.

FULL - PM2 - The Shape of Geometry and the Geometry of Shape

This session takes a look at the idea of "shape" as fundamental and speaks to four developments in recent times that have the potential to change the universe of shapes that are studied: transformations; applications; coordinates; dynamic geometry systems.
