The Manitoba Teachers’ Society is asking members, affiliates, and community supporters to take part in an important initiative aimed at addressing residential school denialism and advancing reconciliation in Canada.

The Society has launched a petition calling on the Government of Canada to support and advance Bill C-254, introduced by Member of Parliament Leah Gazan. The proposed legislation would amend the Criminal Code of Canada to create an offence for willfully promoting hatred against Indigenous peoples by condoning, denying, downplaying, or justifying the Indian Residential School system in public statements.

Through this petition, the Manitoba Teachers’ Society is urging the federal government to take meaningful action by:

  1. Affirming its obligation to combat anti-Indigenous hate, including public denial or distortion of the residential school system; and
  2. Ensuring adequate resources for education and community responses, including Survivor-led initiatives and public education efforts that address residential school denialism and anti-Indigenous hate.

Educators play a vital role in promoting understanding, truth, and reconciliation. Supporting initiatives like this petition helps amplify the voices of Survivors and communities while reinforcing the importance of confronting misinformation and hate.

We encourage you to take a moment to sign the petition and share it with colleagues, friends, and community members. Broad participation will help strengthen the call for action and support ongoing efforts toward reconciliation.

The petition closes on July 2, 2026, at 11:43 a.m. (EDT).
