The federal government has expanded the Canada Student Loan Forgiveness Program to include teachers working in rural and small communities, helping attract and retain professionals in areas where recruitment can be challenging.
As of December 31, 2025, teachers became eligible for the program. Eligibility is based on both occupation and location.
Eligibility Requirements for Teachers
To qualify, teachers must:
- Have worked 10 consecutive months
- Completed at least 400 hours of employment
- Be employed at a school located in an eligible community
For program purposes, an eligible community is defined as a rural area or a population centre with 30,000 or fewer residents.
Loan Forgiveness Amount
Eligible teachers can receive up to $30,000 in student loan forgiveness over a maximum of five years. Loans must be in good standing, and the program applies only to the federal portion of student loans.
