For decades, Manitoba’s educators have stood in solidarity with United Way Winnipeg, recognizing that supporting students means supporting the families and communities around them.
This fall, The Manitoba Teachers’ Society is proud to be partnering once again with Metro School Divisions and labour partners in support of this important work.
Running from Oct. 19 to Nov. 30, the Metro School Division campaign brings Manitoba school communities together to support vital programs and services that help students, families and communities across the province.
For Jason Drysdale, a recently retired educator with 32 years of experience in public education and a member of United Way Winnipeg’s campaign cabinet, the importance of this work runs deep.
“I really grew up in a home that was grounded in giving, community service and lifting others up, and that foundation really stayed with me as I became a teacher, principal, vice-principal and assistant superintendent,” Drysdale said.
During his time as principal of Bernie Wolfe School in the River East Transcona School Division, he saw firsthand how United Way funded agencies supported students and their families. From providing winter clothing and mental health resources to supporting newcomer families and connecting students with essential community services, United Way funded agencies help remove barriers to learning and strengthen school communities.
“Without the help of United Way programs, our work would have been that much harder,” Drysdale said.
While United Way Winnipeg is based in the city, the impact of its programs and services reaches across Manitoba. Resources such as 211 Manitoba connects people throughout the province with essential supports. Donations also support youth-serving agencies, counselling and crisis intervention programs, out-of-school and summer programs, leadership and mentoring programs, as well was mental health youth hubs.
“This is a time when we need to really rally as a community,” Drysdale said. “This is our opportunity to give back and to make our community a better place.”
Through this year’s campaign, The Society is encouraging staff and educators to continue that legacy and demonstrate their collective commitment to public education extends beyond the classroom.
Together, school communities in Manitoba can help ensure vital supports remain available to those who need them most.
