Welcome to the 2025 MTS SAGE Day with META – Manitoba Elementary Teachers’ Association! On our board this year we have, President: Shelley Drewniak, Vice-President: Carol Stewart, Secretary: Christina Miladinovic and Treasurer: Lynne MacDuff! We are a community of passionate educators dedicated to supporting teaching and learning from Kindergarten to Grade 6. Our sessions are designed with purpose and creativity, offering curriculum-based workshops that go beyond the traditional—inviting bold, outside-the-box thinking while grounding our work in both current and historical issues in education.
Through a lens of inclusion, empathy, and equity, META fosters a space where educators can grow in their practice and deepen their understanding of how to best support all learners. Whether you're teaching little ones just beginning their journey or leading learning with older elementary students, we’re here to inspire and empower your work in the classroom and beyond.
All registrants for the virtual and in-person sessions should select the Keynote Speaker for AM and the Keynote Speaker for PM. If you are attending only VIRTUAL sessions, please select one breakout session in the AM and one breakout session in the PM.
If you are participating in person, you will attend the keynote speakers as one group, then select the in-person session to attend one AM session and one PM session taking place at Luxton School , 111 Polson Avenue, Winnipeg, MB.
A breakfast spread will be provided, lunch is on your own.
Registrants participating in half day tours can attend virtual sessions for the alternate half day of their choosing.

FULL - AD Tour: Making Sense of Trauma - Practical Tools for Responding to Children & Youth
A 1-day workshop for anyone supporting children, youth, and caregivers. MSOT helps participants learn how to use a trauma-informed perspective to better understand the relational, neurobiological and development impact of trauma on children, youth and their caregivers. This workshop is appropriate for service providers in a wide range of roles including (but not limited to) education, child welfare, justice, early childhood education and health/mental health. Workshop objectives include:
• Developing an understanding of the impact of trauma on children and youth
• Exploring the current understanding of the nervous system and trauma survival responses

The teachings include a presentation and demonstration of the four sacred medicines used in ceremony: asema, Tobacco; bashkodebiizhik, Sage; giizhik, Cedar; wiingashk, Sweetgrass. Included are teachings: wekas, Rat Root; skitagaan, Chaga; skutamoo, Root of the Lily Pad known as, “Pineapple”; mashkiigobag, Labrador Tea.
This hands-on presentation is on traditional Anishinaabeg medicines provides an opportunity to experience and learn what the medicine looks like, benefits and purpose of use, harvesting, preparation land required for growth and preservation. Utilizing the methodology closely related to education the intent and purpose of the activity is to enlighten and promote understanding on the cultural and traditional teachings of the Anishinaabe/Ojibwa people.
Session will include a hands-on opportunity to view, touch, smell, and taste 2 or 3 of the traditional medicines while listening to the teachings that go with each medicine presented. Participants will reflect and share individual thoughts on the exercise and share feedback on the experience being meaningful, or helpful? In what way?

FULL - AM02: Japanese Canadian History - Resources and Lesson Plans
This presentation focuses on Japanese Canadian Internment during the Second World War. During World War II Japanese Canadians not only faced racism and discrimination but were removed from their homes and communities and placed into prison camps by the Canadian Government. Their homes and properties were taken from them, which had a long-term impact on the Japanese Canadian community. This presentation provides teachers with the resources and lesson plans needed to teach Japanese Canadian internment and dispossession of home.

In July of 2019, Clara Kusumoto participated in Landscapes of Injustice’s Field School and course at the University of Victoria. Landscapes of Injustice is “a research and public history project exploring the dispossession of Japanese Canadians as part of their forced displacement and internment in the 1940s” (Landscapes of Injustice). The two-week course was made up of a one-week bus tour that visited internment camps in the interior of British Columbia. The second week took place at the University of Victoria where they participated in intensive seminars and group projects.

In this session you will learn simple ways to bring storybooks to life through the use of music, movement, drama and props. You will come away with fun lessons and ideas that you can use in your classroom, as well SLO’s and curricular references to make report card writing a breeze.

Purnakama Rajna has been a music and arts teacher for 34 years. She has worked at Victoria Albert school for 18 years where she has incorporated drama, creative movement, visual arts, and dance into her music teaching based on Orff Schulwerk pedagogy. Although she has taught for many years, she is always looking for new and creative ways to inspire students in our quickly changing and sometimes challenging teaching world.

FULL - AM04: Caribbean Dance
Join us for a high-energy Caribbean dance session that fuses rhythm, movement, and culture through the lens of the Physical Education curriculum. This interactive workshop highlights the connection between rhythmic activity and dance outcomes, emphasizing coordination, expression, and cardiovascular fitness. Participants will explore foundational Caribbean dance steps while learning how to incorporate cultural dance into their own teaching practice. The session supports curricular goals in rhythmic movement, creative expression, and physical literacy. No dance experience required – just come ready to move and have fun!
Presenter: Dr. Leisha Strachan
Dr. Leisha Strachan is a first-generation Black Canadian and is blessed to stand on the shoulders of elders in her family and the Black community in Winnipeg, who came to the city facing discrimination and racism yet remained for the opportunities that they foresaw for their children.
Dr. Strachan began her career as a physical educator after completing a Bachelor of Physical Education and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Manitoba. After teaching for three years at the K-8 level, she left teaching to pursue graduate school. She completed a Master of Human Kinetics at the University of Windsor (advisor – Dr. Krista Chandler) and a PhD in Sport Psychology at Queen’s University (advisors – Dr. Jean Côté and Dr. Janice Deakin).
Outside of academia, she has coached baton twirling for over 30 years. She continues to engage and develop the next generation through directing ANANSI School for the Performing Arts, a group working to teach African and Caribbean culture through the arts.

FULL - V-AM01: Essential Questions - Reframing & Rethinking Curriculum Through an Inquiry Lens
This session will provide educators with an introduction to essential questions (EQs). Participants will learn about the different types of questions, purposes, rationales, defining characteristics, and examples. Time will be provided to collectively workshop ideas brought to the session by participants (e.g., grade 3 science unit on plants). This session is suitable for educators of all grade levels and subjects, as well as teacher librarians, specialists, and administrators.

Christie Petersen is a student services teacher in the Pembina Trails School Division and has taught for nearly 20 years. Christie is a PhD candidate at the University of Manitoba and has published several chapters and peer-reviewed articles related to the study of early career teachers and teaching. She is a sessional instructor at the University of Manitoba and Brandon University.
Ronna Cayer is a grade 5 teacher in the Pembina Trails School Division and has taught for over ten years. Ronna graduated with her Master’s in Education in June of 2025 from Brandon University.

FULL - V-AM02: Unravelling Literacy Engagement
This session will provide educators with up-to-date strategies and activities for increasing literacy engagement for elementary students. Charla will guide educators through reflection of student basic needs as they relate to engagement and how meeting these needs through literacy practices will increase engagement and overall success. She will walk through how to apply current research in the classroom, and provide practical strategies, activities, and tasks. Charla Anderson Toews – has a Master's Degree in Interdisciplinary Research in Education. She studied educational neuroscience and literacy in the diverse classroom at the University of Calgary. Charla is currently working within the Winnipeg School Division in a French Immersion primary classroom.

Participants will learn strategies for teaching Treaties in the classroom. Examples and activities will be shared from “The Treaties and the Treaty Relationship Teacher Guides,” for K-4. Penny Ross is a Métis educator from the Interlake Region. She is currently with the Treaty Relations Commission of Manitoba as an In-School Support Consultant. Ms. Ross retired from Evergreen School Division where she was the Indigenous Consultant for seventeen years. She is a mother, author, storyteller and avid gardener.

Presenter Bio: Suprova Huckaby is the Education Coordinator at the Manitoba Children's Museum. Her background is working primarily in science outreach and outdoor learning, with formal education in Environmental Science, Geography, and land-based education. She has facilitated workshops about the outdoors and brings that hands-on approach to the museum classrooms. Suprova believes in the hands-on approach to learning and exploration.

Marlene has been involved in the education system for over 30 years - with students from nursery through high school and with over 20 years focused on elementary and middle years students. She has spent the last 6 years as Faculty advisor at the University of Winnipeg working with teacher candidates. Starting out can be a challenge. Many ideas, strategies to try, new students, and a limited amount of prior experiences may leave you feeling exhausted and overwhelmed.

FULL - V-PM03: Meaning of Home
The Meaning of Home contest is a unique and meaningful way to get your students involved in creative writing and giving back in their community. Kids in grades 4, 5 and 6 can write an entry between 50 and 300 words about what home means to them in English or French. Entries can be submitted online, by mail, or by e-mail during the contest period. Grand prize winners receive a $30,000 grant for their local Habitat and runner-up winners receive $10,000 for their local Habitat, plus all winners receive a tablet for themselves and a pizza party for their class!
In 2024, Manitoba students made history, submitting a record-breaking 3,142 entries – our highest number ever! Thank you to every student, teacher and parent who helped make this achievement possible. The contest was established by founding sponsor Sagen in 2007 to help raise funds and awareness for Habitat for Humanity in Canada, and to engage and educate the next generation in Habitat’s mission to help families access affordable homeownership. Paula Calada, Guidance Counsellor and Jackie Gagnon, CSS Social worker using the book A Handful of Quiet: A Happiness in Four Pebbles developed by Thich Nhat Hanh have developed lessons and strategies to facility students’ abilities to regulate themselves through the introduction of a mindful meditation practice. It is designed to involve children in a hands-on and creative way that touches on their interconnection with nature. Practicing this meditation can help relieve stress, increase concentration, nourish gratitude, and can help children deal with difficult emotions. Join them in creating your own Serenity Box to engage in this easy, fun, focused and relaxing program that you can easily implement in your own daily practice with your students. All grade levels.

FULL - PM Tour: The Mint
A 45-minute tour led by one of the knowledgeable guides who will walk participants through the production process, offer insights on major milestones and entertain you with unique stories about the Mint.
You'll get a bird’s eye view of the production floor, learn about the state-of-art technology used to mass produce circulation coins, learn about the skill and precision that goes into the making of coin design, learn about our record breaking “Million Dollar Coin” and get up close and personal with the 2010 Vancouver Medals.
Step into the boutique which offers a wide range of beautiful coins and commemorative circulation sets with Mint branded items and Canadian themed souvenirs that are perfect keepsakes to remember your visits. Note - a government issue identification card may be asked during larger value transactions.

FULL - V-PM05: Keynote - Building Stronger Math Thinkers: Practical Strategies to Support All Learners K-6
Teaching math can feel overwhelming, especially when trying to meet the diverse needs of every student. This session focuses on two key areas to support learners: providing a toolbox of rich, meaningful problems and using strategies that help students remember and apply what they’ve learned. Participants will explore a range of math problems, from word problems to open-ended and real-world tasks, that target key concepts and can be used in whole-group, small-group or independent settings. We’ll also look at how to make learning stick by using simple, sustainable strategies that support long-term understanding and help students see themselves as capable, confident math thinkers. Teachers will leave with practical tools and ideas they can use right away in their classrooms.
David is currently a school principal in Prince Edward Island, Canada. Prior to this, David was a classroom teacher, numeracy coach, numeracy leader, and curriculum consultant. In addition to this K-12 experience, he has also instructed university courses focusing on curriculum, differentiation, mathematics, and literacy. David has been a keynote and featured speaker at numerous conferences, and has facilitated breakout sessions at regional, national and international conferences. David facilitates professional learning in mathematics and school development in schools and boards across Canada and the United States. David is known for creating interactive and meaningful sessions that not only support educators in understanding mathematics but also in meeting the diverse needs in today's classrooms.
Dr. David Costello recently published four books Messing Around With Math: Ready-to-use Problems that Engage Students in a Better Understanding of Key Math Concepts; Mathematizing Student Thinking: Connecting Problem Solving to Everyday Life and Building Capable and Confident Math Learners; Making Math Stick: Classroom Strategies that Support the Long-term Retention of Math Concepts, and Using What Works: Strategies for Developing a Literacy-Rich Environment in Math.
