Sessions - 9:00 AM-9:45 AM
FULL - 00-Keynote: Place, Purpose, and Possibility: Elevating Physical Education Through Alternative Environments
This talk challenges educators to reconsider where, why, and what learning occurs during a physical education program. By breaking free from the constraints of traditional gymnasium-based activities, new possibilities emerge for meaningful, inclusive, and context-rich physical education. Drawing on current research and practice-based evidence, the session highlights how natural and built alternative environments can enhance student experiences, support diverse learner needs, and inspire innovative pedagogies. Attendees will reflect on conventional practices, the evolving purpose of physical education, and explore practical strategies for enriching its delivery. A hopeful vision will be shared for engaging students through dynamic, relevant, and equitable experiences that extend beyond the gym and promote lifelong physical literacy.
Presenter: Dr. Nathan Hall
Dr. Nathan Hall is an Associate Professor of Physical Education at Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario. His teaching and research are centered around physical literacy, physical activity, and physical education pedagogy. Specifically, Dr. Hall is highly interested in the content delivered in physical education programs and the benefits of introducing children to a wide variety of activities that can promote physical health and well-being across the lifespan. Consequently, a central focus of his present research and teaching is the incorporation of alternative environment activities (AEAs) in physical education programs. Nathan is presently the Chief Editor for the Physical and Health Education (PHE) Canada associated academic journal (Revue phénEPS / PHEnex Journal) and is a Past Chair for the PHE Canada Research Council. He is also a board member for the National Association for Kinesiology in Higher Education (NAKHE), a former winner of the Early Career Scholar Award for the international physical education association (AIESEP) and was closely engaged with both PHE Manitoba and MPESA from 2010-2020 while working at the University of Winnipeg.

FULL - A02: Pickleball 2.0
Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in North America and is experiencing growing popularity in Asia, Mexico and Australia. It has recently been accepted as a sport for funding with Sport Canada. It encompasses all the tenets of a great game: it is relatively easy to learn, but takes practice and time to gain proficiency. Recently the First Annual High School Pickleball Manitoba Championships were held, with 98 high school athletes participating from 9 schools, 5 of which were rural schools. The game’s accessibility, ease of learning and engaging rallies makes it an ideal activity for physical education classes and school based clubs. As students progress in understanding of the game and their skills develop, the game fosters both team building and strategic thinking in an inclusive and social environment.
This session will encompass many aspects of the introduction of the sport of Pickleball to students. Attendees will learn how to teach progressions of the sport to students of various ages with age appropriate drills and games. Rules will be discussed as well as equipment needed, and ideas for teachers to source equipment for schools, as well as opportunities to receive training for teachers/students provided in school by Pickleball Manitoba. Scoring and court positioning, game strategies and tournament formats as well as referees roles will be presented to attendees with the opportunity for teachers to participate in all aspects of the game for a deeper understanding of Pickleball. A set of paddles and net will be provided for a lucky school as a draw prize.
Pickleball Manitoba is the provincial organization responsible for the promotion of the sport in the province of Manitoba. One of the strategic arms of the organization is to promote the sport to youth, and we are so pleased to be able to present this wonderful game to Manitoba Physical Health Educators.
