Session Description
Trauma-informed Care and Growing Resilience
Participants will learn about the prevalence and pernicious nature of adverse experiences and how they may impact child and adolescent development. More importantly, participants will learn how to assist youth impacted by adverse experiences to help them adapt and be resilient in the face of adversity.
The workshop will focus on the following topics:
- Understanding Traumatic Experiences: Participants will learn about trauma-informed classrooms.
- Seven Attributes of a Trauma-sensitive Classroom: Things to consider in creating a trauma-sensitive classroom. When to differentiate, adapt, and modify learning.
- Polyvagal Care: What is polyvagal theory and how can we use it to gauge learner presence and learning potential.
- Helpful Communication and Skill Building: Essential acceptance and commitment training and brief introduction to dialectical behavioural approaches.
- Managing Difficult Situations: Participants will learn how to manage difficult situations using a trauma informed approach. Using a polyvagal crisis developmental lens, participants will learn how to respond to different neuroceptive states (Safe/Connected, Flight, Fight, and freeze) effectively.
