What are Teacher Action Cohorts

The Teacher Action Cohorts are Manitoba Teachers’ Society members who are trained facilitators. These volunteers are available at no cost to teacher associations and public school staffs.

TACs facilitate teacher voice and learning through the activity-based workshops below.

Talking about school goal-setting & planning

Participants will have the opportunity to be actively involved in school planning and decision making. The workshop will utilize the mandated school planning process and the local context to arrive at a school plan based on the professional opinions of the participants.

This workshop requires a full day and can be arranged for any point in the school planning process. A series of workshops can be arranged to assist with on-going planning.

Talking about homophobia

Participants will examine and reflect on personal values, beliefs and biases and how these interact with homophobia issues in their classrooms and school communities.

Participants will have the opportunity to acquire and utilize resources depicting Gay, Lesbian, Bi, Trans and Queer (GLBTQ) perspectives, and to identify and analyze the impact on their work setting of issues like harassment and bullying based on homophobia. This workshop requires a full day.

Talking about racism

Participants will examine and reflect on personal values, beliefs and biases and how these interact with racism issues in their classrooms and school communities.

Participants will have the opportunity to acquire and utilize anti-racism resources, and to identify and analyze the impact on their work setting of issues like harassment and bullying based on racism. This workshop requires a full day.

Talking about Aboriginal issues in education

Participants will examine and reflect on personal values, beliefs and biases about Canada’s Aboriginal peoples and how these affect their interactions in classrooms and school communities.

Participants will have the opportunity to acquire and utilize resources pertaining to Aboriginal perspectives and beliefs. They will also identify and analyze various elements of the teaching and learning environment as they are perceived by Aboriginal students and teachers.

Talking about gender issues in education

Participants will examine and reflect on personal values, beliefs and biases and how these interact with gender issues in their classrooms and school communities.

Participants will have the opportunity to acquire and utilize resources pertaining to gender, and to identify and analyze the impact on their work setting of issues like harassment and bullying based on gender. This workshop requires a full day.

Talking about teacher associations

Members of teacher association executives will have the opportunity to establish operational norms, policies and procedures, and to set association goals and strategies.

The workshop will address issues common to volunteer boards. Arrangements can be made for day, evening or weekend workshops as well as for a series of workshops to assist with on-going association development.
