V.T.A.M.’s annual Special Area Group Conference is a prime opportunity for teachers, students, and the community at large to experience Vocational Education. Built on a solid relationship with business and educators, the SAGE conference provides VTAM and MTS members with a resource for learning that offers hands on training for a number of applied skills. Our presenters include teachers, post-secondary students, instructors from post-secondary institutions, and members from industry. Coffee and lunch are included in your conference registration.  Please note any dietary restrictions at point of registration on the MTS website. Payments may be made online through MTS’s online system.

Keynote Information

Gang Awareness in Manitoba / Winnipeg
Winnipeg City Police

Constable Steve Mitchell is a 13-year vet of the Winnipeg Police Department. He has severed in uniform operations in the downtown division, as well as plain cloths detective units. Constable Mitchell has spent the last seven years working in the Street Crime Unit, as well as the Organized Crime Unit. Constable Mitchell is currently recognized by the Courts of Queens Bench as a certified expert in the operation of Indigenous based street gangs and has held the position of National Tier III representative and enforcement of the Outlaw Biker Strategy.

Screen Printing Special Effect Inks on T-Shirts

Session Description:  Join Morgan Young from Lancer Group International, as he gives an in-depth presentation and demonstration of how to screen print special effects onto t-shirts.  Learn how to properly use Puff, High density, glow in the dark, and other specialty inks in a simple manner that will easily translate into the classroom.

Session time:  Demonstration will be from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon.   Lunch will be provided immediately after the session, at the Discovery / Lancer Group location.

Bear Clan Patrol

Session Description:  Join the Bear Clan Patrol on a walkabout and engage in learning how a community of people can work within the community to provide personal security in the inner city, in a non-threatening, non-violent, and supportive manner.  The Bear Clan draws its direction solely from their traditional philosophies and practices.

Session time:  Walk will begin immediately after the AGM.  Meet at the front doors of the school, where the members of the Bear Clan will greet you.

Digital Art with an iPad           

Session Description: Are you interested in learning about how iPad and Apple Pencil can be used to foster creativity through artistic expression?  Join us in this session to explore simple ways that students can create digital and professional looking art to share with the world.

Youth and Teen Anxiety                    

Session Description: Dan Hall is a middle school teacher, who has focused a great deal of his career, studying and understanding mental health, both in adults and youth.  He will share information to help you, and your children / students learn to cope with anxiety.

Bird of Paradise Therapeutic Workshop                

Session Description: Working with flowers is a great way to relax, unwind, and deepen your connection with nature.  Let your creativity flow in the atmosphere of our tropical greenhouses, have some fun, learn about the simple-ness, yet complexity of flowers, and make a unique tropical floral bird with RB Russell’s award-winning horticulture teacher and horticulture therapist, Louise Shachtay.  Flowers provided…  just bring your creativity.

Street Drug Education                 

Session Description: This will be a continuation of last year’s Key Note Drug Awareness session. Cory will present on the Dangers of Crystal Methamphetamine, and both presenters will be able to answer questions regarding Crystal Meth, and other street drugs.

Succulent Garden Workshop                    

Session Description: For all succulent plant lovers!  Come to the RB Russell Horticulture Program and make a succulent dish garden in our tropical greenhouse setting.  Learn about the care and how to grow succulents, and make your own creation using a variety of succulents and cacti.  Bring your own container.  All materials, including three, 3” pot succulent plants, one 3” pot cacti plant, growing media, rocks, and some decorative elements will be provided. Extra succulents will be available for purchase.  Your creation is yours to take home.

Essential Braids                    

Session Description: Michelle Chui, from Moroccan Oil, will guide you through Essential Braids, a foundational braiding course designed to introduce stylists of any skill level, and the art of braiding.  Six different braiding techniques will be shared, that could be incorporated into any hairstyle.

PayPal payments for conference are encouraged.  Please print receipts, or have a copy of your payment on your phone.  We do not anticipate any challenges with PayPal, or MTS online registration, however, glitches sometimes happen, out of our control, and appreciate your effort to confirm payment and registration.

Please note that lunch will be supplied by the Culinary Arts Department at RB Russell Vocational School.
