The Manitoba Teachers’ Society President Norm Gould has announced that MTS will be one of a group of official supporters bringing the 2017 Canada Games to Winnipeg next summer.

Gould made the announcement June 29 at a joint media conference with Investors Group, Sport Manitoba, Canada Games representatives and Maple Leaf Construction.

Gould also called on the over 15,000 members of MTS to volunteer their organizational abilities and energy to the games.

“Teachers are often the life-blood of so many community projects. This is a fantastic opportunity for us to share our expertise and encourage healthy, active living among our students,” he said. “Young athletes already know that teachers have their backs. This is a further demonstration of our commitment to these talented young people in every city and town across the province.”

The amateur, multi-sport Canada Games are held every two years. The 2017 event is expected to draw up to 25,000 visitors into Winnipeg, seat over 241,000 spectators in multiple venues, and be televised and livestreamed to over a million viewers. Next year will mark the 50th anniversary of the games.
