All public school teachers in Manitoba are automatically members of The Manitoba Teachers' Society.

Teachers who are not employed as a teacher, including retired teachers who are collecting a pension pursuant to the Teachers’ Pension Act, but are no longer employed as teachers; are eligible to apply for Associate Membership in The Manitoba Teachers' Society.  The Society represents teachers in Nelson House and Sandy Bay teachers’ associations pursuant to MTS Bylaws.

A teacher who has retired from employment with a public school division and is in receipt of a pension pursuant to The Teachers’ Pension Act, and is substitute teaching or on a term contract; as an associate member:

• shall be entitled to:
• legal services in relation to the administration of any applicable collective agreement.
• be members of any Special Area Groups.
• receive a copy of the Society’s handbook and other publications as determined by the Provincial Executive
• shall not run for office, nominate others, or vote for the MTS president or be a delegate at the annual meeting of Provincial Council.
• shall not have access to the Educator Assistance Program.

All other associate members:

• shall be entitled to:
• be members of any Special Area Groups.
• receive a copy of the Society’s handbook and other publications as determined by the Provincial Executive
• shall not run for office, nominate others, or vote for the MTS president or be a delegate at the annual meeting of Provincial Council.
• shall not have access to the Educator Assistance Program
• shall not be eligible for legal services.

The Code of Professional Practice applies to all associate members.

All students in Manitoba post-secondary institutions, who are enrolled in courses leading to certification as teachers, are eligible, upon application, to become student members of The Manitoba Teachers’ Society.

Student members are entitled to information from the Society concerning professional issues, access to membership in the Society’s Special Area Groups, the Society’s handbook and discounts at participating merchants.

The Code of Professional Practice applies to student members. Student members shall not run for office, nominate others, or vote for the MTS president or be a delegate at the annual meeting of Provincial Council. Student members do not have access to the Educator Assistance Program and are not eligible for legal services.
