Deferred Salary Leave Plan
  • A tax deferred savings plan that provides the opportunity for paid leave from teaching.
  • Administered by local Division or District and by Investors Group/Great West Life..
  • Optional participation.
  • Integrated into the Collective Agreements of participating Divisions/Associations to 
    ensure opportunities for both leave and a guaranteed return to work in a similar position.
  • Must apply to your Division/District by March 31 of each year.
  • Member may agree to defer up to 33 per cent of gross salary for up to 6 school years to 
    allow for a paid or self-funded leave of up to one school year.
  • Member must return to teaching assignment for period equivalent to period of leave.
  • Not available in all associations.

Disability:
MPSEGLIP Group Life Insurance Plan : May continue without premiums up to age 65: if approved for MTS disability benefits or MSBA long term disability benefits or if approved for a waiver of premium by Great-West Life (if eligible under above-mentioned plans). Premiums required until approved for disability or waiver.
MSBA/MTS Dental / MTSHealth: May continue but must be for the full duration of the leave (employee's option)
Approved study, sabbatical, improve qualifications or educational,external affairs or DND, maternity, paternity, adoption:
MPSEGLIP Group Life Insurance Plan : Must continue for up to 2 years.
MSBA/MTS Dental / MTSHealth: May continue but must be for the full duration of the leave-except no health coverage if on a trip outside of the country for longer than 90 days.
Personal or DSLP:
MPSEGLIP Group Life Insurance Plan : Must continue for up to 1 year.
MSBA/MTS Dental / MTSHealth: May continue but must be for the full duration of the leave-except no health coverage if on a trip outside of the country for longer than 90 days.

Premiums required for the duration of the leave; to be collected in a manner mutually agreeable to the employee and division (does not apply to MPSEGLIP) if waiver of premium approved). If health and/or dental coverage elected; it may be cancelled if the employee obtains alternate group coverage during the leave.

Group life insurance

  • Full name - Manitoba Public School Employees Group Life Insurance Plan (MPSEGLIP)
  • Responsibility of the MPSEGLIP Trust Committee
  • Administered by Great West Life
  • Mandatory participation in participating Divisions/Associations, though level of coverage 
    is discretionary beyond the Basic coverage

Premiums effective October 1st, 2009

  • Basic Insurance: 10.0 cents per $1,000 of insurance
    • Premium for the mandatory insurance of 200 per cent of earnings are shared between the division and employee on a 50/50 basis.
    • Premiums for insurance above 200 per cent of earnings (300 and 400 per cent) are employee paid.
  • Family Life Insurance: $5.00 per month 

    Accidental Death and Dismemberment: 
  • Single: 50 cents per $15,000 of insurance
  • Family: 75 cents per $15,000 of insurance

How can I increase or reduce my coverage?

  • You can reduce coverage at any time, subject to certain minimum requirements.
  • You can increase or add coverage at life events such as:
    • when you get married or are in a newly-recognized common law relationship.
    • birth of your first child, provided you apply within 90 days of the event.
  • You can increase or add coverage at any time but only if you provide medical evidence of insurability satisfactory to the insurer.
  • There is an enrolment period for AD and D only, every September.

Plan Eligibility on a Leave of Absence

The following Teacher Associations are NOTcovered by MPSEGLIP and have a separate life
insurance plan:

  • Park West Teachers' Association
  • Seven Oaks Teachers' Association
  • Thompson Teachers' Association

Administrator in the Division office.

MTS dental plan

Dental plan booklets for all associations

  • Responsibility of MTS/MSBA Dental Trust Committee.
  • Administered through Manitoba Blue Cross.
  • Mandatory participation in participating Divisions/Districts; premiums paid 
    through payroll deductions

Benefits payable:

The Provincial Dental plan allows for coverage under one, two or three levels listed below.

Each association decides firstly if it is going to have coverage under level one, two or three and secondly the amount of coverage at each; the most common being 80% level one, 50% level two and 50% level three.

This means that a claimant will get 80% of the costs the Dental work under level one, 50% under level two, and 50% of the costs under level three.

Note, most associations also have either annual or lifetime caps on levels two and three.

Examinations, filling, periodontics, cleaning, endodontics, consultations, fluoride, extractions, X-rays, space maintainer, drugs, anaesthetics , denture repairs
Major Restorative
Bridges and crowns, gold fillings (if required), partial and complete dentures, replacement of existing appliances (if five years old or rendered unserviceable as a result of additional work if temporary only)
Orthodontics
Correction of malocclusion of the teeth, observation adjustments, repairs and alterations, appliance service, recementation of bands, consultations

The following summarizes the features of the Plans available to MTS members. The following benefit information is a summary of employee benefit plans which may be applicable to employment in your Division. Note that benefit plans may vary by division, and where practicable, this has been noted.
In the case of any discrepancies, benefits will be paid according to the terms of the official plan documents and applicable legislation. In the event of any variations between this and the official Plan
