Compensation differs from school division to school division
School divisions across Manitoba have policies and practices that cover compensation for teachers who coach or take part in other extra-curricular activities with students.
Here’s a sample of some of those policies and practices.
- Garden Valley – a teacher who participates in extra-curricular activities receives a paid leave of one day per school year when 55 or more hours are accumulated; staff may claim mileage if they use a personal vehicle to transport students for a school activity
- Lord Selkirk – teachers receive one extra-curricular leave day after they contribute 50 or more hours; teachers can claim for a portion of their expenses.
- Mountain View – teachers who contribute toward extra-curricular activities receive a payment equal to the current substitute teacher rate, to a maximum of two payments per school year. A teacher is eligible for his/her first and second payment upon completion of each 50 hours of contribution. Where a teacher hasn’t accumulated enough hours for their first/second payment, they can carry those hours over to the following school year. Teachers who are entitled to a payment(s) may instead receive one day of leave for each payment with no loss of pay or benefits.
- Pembina Trails – teachers can earn one paid leave day for every 55 hours, up to a maximum of five days in the school year (highest in the province); teachers who use their own vehicles can claim mileage.
- Portage la Prairie – teachers receive one day of paid leave once they contribute 50 or more hours; teachers who coach or referee at the provincial level receive paid time off for the period of time they require.
- St. James-Assiniboia – teachers receive one day paid leave of absence per school year after they accumulate 50 or more hours; teachers are reimbursed for reasonable, proven and actual out-of-pocket expenses.
- Seven Oaks – coaches are invited to an appreciation dinner banquet and receive a gift valued at approximately $35; high school teachers who convene a Kildonan Peguis Athlete Conference activity receive an honorarium through the KPAC.
- Winnipeg – teachers who coach 50 or more hours receive one discretionary day; coaches may also receive professional development of up to $100 per sport to attend a clinic; coaches can claim mileage for travelling to away games or tournaments.
