BIOGRAPHY

Born and raised in Winnipeg, Mary received her Bachelor of Education from Brandon University.

Starting in 1997 to 1999 Mary substitute taught in the former St. Vital School Division and in the former Morris-McDonald School Division. In the fall of 1999 she traveled to Gomez Palacio a small town in Mexico to teach English to grade one and two. Upon returning from Mexico three years later she once again began substitute teaching in Winnipeg. In the fall of 2001 she was hired to teach at Sprague in Border Land School Division where she remained for eight years. This past year she transferred to Shevchenko School in Vita.

Mary joined the Border Land Teachers’ Association during Amalgamation.  At that time she became a council rep for her school. Soon after, she became the PD representive for her school.  During that time she worked hard to represent her school within the new school division.   Beginning in 2004 to 2005 she worked as Vice President for the Association. Since 2005 Mary has been the President of Border Land Teachers’ Association.

As President of the B.L.T.A. she has worked hard to meet the diverse needs of her Association. Although, the position of President has required extensive travel to reach the teachers in the various schools, Mary has enjoyed the opportunity to meet and listen to teachers. She has built many relationships within her association while networking with her teachers.  Attending Presidents’ Council meetings and her experience on PDSC the last two years have allowed her to connect with teachers around the province.

Mary currently lives in Steinbach. She has many friends from around the province that she has met through her work at the Manitoba Teachers’ Society. When she isn’t working as a teacher or President she enjoys golfing, swimming, camping and traveling.

ELECTION STATEMENT

My experiences as the President of my local association and being a member of PDSC have allowed me to build relationships locally, regionally, and provincially. Being elected to Provincial Executive will allow me the opportunity to continue to network with teachers.

Listening teachers is a priority for me.  As an active Society we must continue to address issues that directly affect classroom teachers. Issues such as class size, composition, equity, and professional development autonomy have an impact on the everyday teacher.

I believe in the power of this organization and we need to work together to provide services and political leadership to our teachers.
I look forward to representing you on the Provincial Executive and I ask for your support in electing me.
